The Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets swap top prospects Rutger McGroarty and Brayden Yager, both former No. 14 picks, in a trade that could benefit both franchises.

Bollywood Fever: In a rare and intriguing exchange, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets have traded top prospects who were both selected as the No. 14 overall picks in consecutive NHL drafts.

ESPN’s Ryan S. Clark views this as a potential “win-win” deal for both franchises, providing fresh opportunities for the young talents involved.

On August 22, the NHL and both teams announced that the Jets had sent forward Rutger McGroarty, the No. 14 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, to the Penguins in exchange for forward Brayden Yager, the No. 14 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Rutger McGroarty, a 20-year-old forward, was drafted by Winnipeg in 2022, but the franchise struggled to sign him to an entry-level contract. With concerns about his future in the organization, McGroarty and the Jets failed to reach an agreement, leading to his eventual departure from Canada.

The trade to Pittsburgh provides McGroarty with a fresh start, and the Penguins have already demonstrated their confidence in him by signing him to an entry-level contract.

This move signals the player’s readiness to turn professional and Pittsburgh’s belief in his potential to contribute to their success.

On the other side, Brayden Yager, who recently signed his entry-level deal with Pittsburgh in July 2024, has also shown considerable promise.

Yager had an outstanding season with the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL, where he helped his team secure a championship.

The 19-year-old forward recorded 95 points during the regular season and added 27 points in the playoffs, showcasing his scoring ability and playmaking skills.

For both McGroarty and Yager, this trade represents a new chapter in their careers. While McGroarty’s move was motivated by the need for a change of scenery, Yager’s transition to Winnipeg provides him with a fresh environment to continue his development.

Ultimately, this swap of top prospects offers both players the opportunity to grow within new organizations, and if all goes well, it could indeed be a “win-win” scenario for both the Penguins and the Jets.
