Phil Foden leaves England’s national team camp to attend the birth of his third child. The FA confirms the pressing family matter, with Foden expected to return for the round of 16 match.
Bollywood Fever: England star Phil Foden has temporarily left the national team’s camp and returned home due to a “pressing family matter,” the Football Association (FA) confirmed in a statement.
“Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to the UK for a pressing family matter,” the FA’s statement read.
Foden and his partner Rebecca Cooke already have two children: son Ronnie, born in 2019, and a daughter welcomed in 2021. Ronnie, who has become an Instagram celebrity with millions of followers, revealed in April that his parents were expecting a third child. The family posed with a sign reading ‘Baby Foden,’ shared on Ronnie’s Instagram account.
Foden, who plays club football for Manchester City, participated in England’s match against Slovenia on Tuesday. The forward left the camp after the goalless draw in Cologne, which secured England’s top spot in their group.
England’s next match is not until Sunday, giving the 24-year-old a chance to return in time for the round of 16 match in Gelsenkirchen. The opponent for this tie will be determined after the conclusion of Group E and Group F matches on Wednesday.
Reflecting on fatherhood in an earlier interview, Foden shared his emotional experience of being present for his eldest child’s birth. “I walked out of the room, gave it a little tear, and then went back in like nothing happened. I like to be on my own, but I was there in the room, watched it happen, and it was a special moment,” he said.
Foden started all three of England’s group stage matches, playing the full 90 minutes against Serbia and being substituted in the latter stages of the draws against Denmark and Slovenia. Since March 2023, Foden has missed just one match for England, being a key player under Gareth Southgate.
The Manchester City academy graduate was instrumental in his team’s title defense last season and has scored four goals in 37 senior appearances for England, including one in the group stages of the 2022 World Cup against Wales.
