Poland Implements Emergency Measures to Control Toxic Golden Algae in Oder River

Poland’s climate ministry takes urgent action using hydrogen peroxide to reduce toxic golden algae in the Oder River, preventing a repeat of the 2022 pollution crisis.

Poland, Bollywood Fever: Poland has intensified efforts to contain the spread of toxic golden algae in the tributary system of the Oder River, aiming to prevent a recurrence of the devastating pollution crisis that struck the waterway in 2022, according to the climate ministry.

In a recent move, hydrogen peroxide was introduced at the junction of the Gliwice Canal and the Klodnica River, resulting in a significant reduction of the algae by over 90%, the ministry confirmed in a statement. Despite this progress, the situation remains critical. Between August 3 and 16, approximately 77 tons of fish perished in the affected section of the canal and the nearby Lake Dzierzno Duze.

“We emphasize that the use of hydrogen peroxide is a crisis measure, not a systemic one,” the ministry stated, highlighting the temporary nature of this intervention.

The rapid growth of golden algae is primarily attributed to saline water discharged by the mining industry into the rivers. To address this, Poland is currently developing a plan to construct desalination installations.

The summer of 2022 saw the discovery of hundreds of tons of dead fish in the Oder River, which flows along part of Poland’s border with Germany. While the situation has improved, smaller quantities of dead fish have been found in the river and its tributaries on multiple occasions this year.
