Prince Harry and Meghan concluded their Colombia visit by participating in a forum on the challenges faced by Afro-Colombian women in politics, advocating for equality and social programs.
Colombia, Bollywood Fever: Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, concluded their visit to Colombia on Sunday by engaging in a forum that highlighted the challenges faced by women of African descent in politics.
The event, held in the Pacific coast city of Cali, was part of their tour, which began on Thursday at the invitation of Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez, the nation’s first Black vice president.
The forum, titled “Afro Women and Power,” was characterized by the vibrant Afro-Colombian culture, with traditional music and poetry setting the stage for discussions on the difficulties Black women face in political participation.
The Duchess of Sussex expressed her gratitude to the audience in Spanish, revealing that she learned the language two decades ago, saying, “I can feel this embrace from Colombia. It is incredible, thank you very much.”
Panelists, including Ana Granja, discussed the obstacles for Black women in politics, citing racism and discrimination as significant barriers.
Vice President Márquez emphasized the resilience of Black women, calling them “strong, brave women” due to their living conditions.
She urged the couple to help generate financial support and strengthen social programs for women affected by gender violence and youth.
The visit aligns with the couple’s ongoing support of cultural and social causes through their Archewell Foundation.
During their time in Colombia, they also visited communities in San Basilio de Palenque in Cartagena, known for preserving African roots, and participated in a forum on digital security in Bogotá, where they advocated for mental health and the fight against cyberbullying.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to Colombia has been marked by their commitment to addressing social issues, particularly those affecting women, children, and marginalized communities.
Their involvement in forums and community visits reflects their dedication to promoting equality and social justice on a global scale.
