Paul Barresi, a private investigator hired by Amber Heard’s legal team, recounts his experiences during the infamous Depp v Heard trial and how his investigation shifted his perspective.
Bollywood Fever: Paul Barresi, a former wrestler and Hollywood private investigator, is still haunted by the expression on Amber Heard‘s face during her 2022 testimony against Johnny Depp. In that infamous U.S. courtroom scene, Heard claimed Depp had sexually assaulted her with a bottle of bourbon. Despite her emotional testimony, the jury sided with Depp.
Barresi, 77, recalls a chilling similarity between Heard’s expression and that of his mother’s when his father attacked her. “The thing is, I’d seen that expression before, on my mother’s face, when my father attacked her,” he says, reenacting the traumatic event in his own California kitchen. This personal connection left Barresi conflicted, even though he ultimately believed the jury’s verdict was correct.

Barresi was initially hired by Heard’s legal team in 2019 to dig up damaging evidence against Depp. However, despite extensive efforts, he found no evidence supporting the claims of Depp’s violent tendencies. “I spoke to hundreds of people, everything’s here,” he says, gesturing to a pile of evidence on his table. “I left no stone unturned.”
Despite his findings, Barresi maintains a nuanced view of the case. He believes Depp was often inebriated and obnoxious but not inherently violent. “He was a mumbling, fumbling, stumbling drunk,” Barresi admits, adding that many of Depp’s negative behaviors could be attributed to his associations rather than his character.

Barresi’s investigation led him to switch allegiances, feeling that he was hired under false pretenses. He has since written a book about his experience, titled Johnny Depp’s Accidental Fixer, which paints Depp in a largely positive light. Barresi’s admiration for Depp grew as he uncovered more about Depp’s background, which mirrored his own troubled childhood.

Barresi’s work as a Hollywood fixer has brought him into contact with numerous celebrities, including Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Joan Rivers. His colorful career, marked by both commendable achievements and controversies, adds another layer to the Depp-Heard saga.
The Depp-Heard trial continues to captivate public attention, with opinions divided and new details emerging regularly. Barresi’s unique perspective as a private investigator offers valuable insight into the complexities of the case and the individuals involved.
