Indian shuttler and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu secured a decisive victory in the first round of the Singapore Open 2024 against Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt on Wednesday.Â
Sindhu defeated her Danish opponent 12-21, 20-22 in a match that lasted 44 minutes. Sindhu controlled the game from the outset, winning the first set 12-21. In the second set, Hojmark attempted a comeback but Sindhu secured a 20-22 win to advance to the next round of the tournament.
Earlier on Sunday, Sindhu was defeated in the final match of the Malaysia Masters by China’s Wang Zhi Yi. The Indian shuttler lost 21-16, 5-21, 16-21 in the women’s singles final.
Sindhu started the final on a positive note, winning the first set 21-16. However, in the second set, her Chinese opponent made a strong comeback, winning 5-21. In the deciding set, Zhiyi prevailed, defeating Sindhu 16-21.
In the Malaysia Masters semifinal, Sindhu overcame Busanan Ongbamrungphan 13-21, 21-16, 21-12 to secure her place in the final. This final marked her first appearance in a tournament final since the 2023 Spain Masters.
Meanwhile, the world’s top-ranked badminton duo, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, experienced a surprising early exit in the men’s doubles first round of the Singapore Open 2024 on Tuesday.
Chirag and Satwik were defeated by the 34th-ranked Danish pair, Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard, in a 47-minute contest. The Indian pair lost in straight sets, 20-22, 18-21.
