Quentin Tarantino believes Alec Baldwin bears partial responsibility for Halyna Hutchins’ death on the ‘Rust’ set, despite the primary blame on armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
Bollywood Fever: Quentin Tarantino has stirred controversy with his recent comments on the tragic 2021 shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.
While acknowledging that Alec Baldwin is not solely responsible for the incident, the Pulp Fiction director asserted that Baldwin does share some of the blame.
During Sunday’s episode of Bill Maher’s podcast Club Random, Tarantino discussed the fatal shooting, attributing 90% of the responsibility to armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, while placing the remaining 10% on Baldwin.
It’s a situation, I think I’m being fair enough to say, that the armorer — the guy who handles the gun — is 90% responsible for everything that happens when it comes to that gun… but but but but but…. the actor is 10% responsible,” Tarantino stated. He further added, “You are a partner in responsibility to some degree.”
Tarantino also expressed his belief that actors should personally inspect their weapons to ensure there are no live rounds or other issues before using them in scenes.
In July, a New Mexico judge dismissed the manslaughter case against Baldwin after it was revealed that prosecutors had improperly placed crucial evidence in a file that was not accessible to Baldwin’s legal team.
This decision came after a hearing that exposed mishandled evidence, which Baldwin’s lawyers argued had been “concealed” and “buried” in another case file.
Baldwin had been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, accused of negligence for accidentally firing a live round on the Rust set in October 2021. Prosecutors had planned to argue that the firearm “could not have fired absent a pull of the trigger” and was functioning correctly before the shooting.
In April of this year, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on set, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hutchins’ death and sentenced to 18 months.
She is currently serving her sentence at the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility and was expected to testify in Baldwin’s case.
The shooting occurred while Baldwin was rehearsing a cross-draw maneuver with the revolver, which discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
Baldwin has maintained his innocence, claiming the gun accidentally fired after he pulled back the hammer.
The night before the incident, six members of the camera crew had walked off the set due to safety concerns.
Baldwin was charged twice in connection with Hutchins’ death, with prosecutors dismissing and then refiling the charges after receiving a new analysis of the revolver involved.
Since the 2021 shooting, Rust has resumed filming in Montana under an agreement with Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, who was made an executive producer. The completed movie has yet to be released to the public.
