Bollywood Fever: Frankie Beverly, the iconic singer, songwriter, and founder of the R&B and funk band Maze, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 77, according to a statement from his family. No cause of death was announced.
In their heartfelt tribute, the family honored Beverly’s life, stating, “We honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly known to the world as Frankie Beverly… He lived for his music, family and friends.” They also requested privacy during this time.
Beverly’s smooth baritone voice powered Maze’s ‘80s hits like “Back in Stride,” “Before I Let Go,” and “Can’t Get Over You,” earning him a beloved following. Known for his signature stage attire of all-white clothing and baseball caps, Beverly’s live performances were unforgettable, with his elegant vocals captivating audiences around the world.
Born Howard Stanley Beverly on December 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, Beverly’s musical journey began early.
He sang gospel in local churches and formed several vocal groups, including the Blenders and the Butlers, during his teenage years. By the early ’70s, his group, renamed Raw Soul, moved to San Francisco and caught the attention of Marvin Gaye, who became a fan and mentor.
Under Gaye’s guidance, the band changed their name to Maze and signed with Capitol Records.
While not as commercially dominant as some of their contemporaries like Earth, Wind & Fire, Maze created timeless music, with Beverly’s soulful voice becoming synonymous with love, unity, and joy in the R&B world.
Frankie Beverly’s impact on music will be remembered for generations, and his legacy lives on through his timeless contributions to the R&B and funk genres.
