Rebel Wilson responds to defamation lawsuit from The Deb producers, denying allegations of unprofessional behavior and defending her actions as a first-time director.
Bollywood Fever: Rebel Wilson has fired back against allegations from the producers of her directorial debut, The Deb, who have filed a defamation lawsuit against her. The 44-year-old actress took to Instagram to refute claims about her behavior on set.
On Friday, July 12, Wilson shared a heartfelt post on her Instagram Story, featuring a clip from the film’s cinematographer, Ross Emery. The video showed Wilson happily dancing with the cast and crew after wrapping the last shot of the movie. She used this to counter the producers’ allegations, stating, “This is what happened immediately after we finished our last shot of the film with the entire cast and crew.”
Wilson continued to denounce the lawsuit in subsequent Instagram Stories, expressing her frustration with the producers’ accusations. “But now these f–kwit ‘producers’ are trying to file a defamation case claiming all sorts of rubbish,” she wrote, alongside behind-the-scenes photos from The Deb. “The cast & crew are with me and want this movie to premiere at Toronto!”
Wilson had previously accused the producers of delaying the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival due to their demands. She reiterated her stance, adding, “They’ve been called out for their bad behavior and now they file a defamation claim. Ummm I’m pretty sure I have 200 witnesses to prove what I’m saying is right! So good luck f–kwit ‘producers’ trying to prove anything other than I’m a professional, who did an amazing job as a first-time female director!”
Wilson concluded her defense with a message of solidarity for her team, saying, “Love to my brilliant cast & crew who know the truth. And it’s not defamation if it’s the TRUTH!”
The producers in question, Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron, and Vince Holden, filed the lawsuit on Friday, accusing Wilson of trying to “bully” them into conceding to her demands by spreading false information. They claimed she behaved unprofessionally on set and made unauthorized disclosures about the film.
In a video posted on Instagram on Wednesday, July 10, Wilson had accused the producers of bad behavior, which she said prevented The Deb from premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. She alleged that their misconduct included inappropriate behavior towards the lead actress and embezzling funds from the film’s budget.
Wilson explained that her report of their behavior led to the retaliatory lawsuit. “Since I reported that behavior, I have been met with absolute viciousness and retaliatory behavior,” she said.
The unfolding legal battle casts a shadow over what should be a celebratory period for Wilson and her team as they prepare for the film’s release. Despite the allegations, Wilson remains firm in her defense, standing by her actions and the integrity of her work on The Deb.
