Report: Reddit Allegedly Grants Access to Content for AI Model Training
Reddit appears to be delving into the realm of AI innovation by potentially licensing its content for training AI models.Â
Reports suggest that the popular social media platform, often dubbed the “front page of the internet,” has struck a content licensing deal allowing its data to be utilized for AI model training.
Amid anticipation for its potential $5 billion IPO debut in March, Bloomberg disclosed that Reddit had inked a $60 million agreement with a significant AI company, potentially aiming to bolster investor confidence by showcasing additional revenue streams within the AI landscape.
However, Reddit has yet to officially acknowledge the reported deal.
This development implies that Reddit’s vast array of posts, spanning from popular subreddits to the comments of both active contributors and passive observers, could contribute to the refinement of existing Large Language Models (LLMs) or serve as a foundation for future generative AI endeavors.
Nevertheless, the decision is not without controversy, as Reddit’s user base has previously expressed discontent with the platform’s business decisions.
Last year, Reddit faced backlash following its announcement of plans to charge for access to its APIs, prompting thousands of Reddit forums to shut down in protest.
Subsequently, the site experienced a temporary crash, and a group of hackers threatened to release previously pilfered site data unless Reddit CEO Steve Huffman reversed the API strategy or paid a hefty sum.
In response, Reddit purged years of private chat logs and user messages, citing the need to clear data predating January 1, 2023, in preparation for a revamped chat infrastructure.
