Rita Ora supports calls for husband Taika Waititi to direct a film about Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn’s 2024 Paris Olympics breakdancing fiasco. The viral sensation’s story could hit the big screen soon.
Rita Ora has thrown her support behind the idea of her husband, Taika Waititi, directing a movie about the viral 2024 Paris Olympics moment featuring Australian breakdancer Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn.
The British singer, 33, took to Instagram to hint that she’d be interested in producing the film, alongside actress Jodie Turner-Smith.
It all started when Jodie Turner-Smith, known for her role in Queen and Slim, posted an article about Raygun being named the world’s top female breakdancer despite her infamous Olympic routine.
Jodie called on New Zealand filmmaker Taika, 49, to bring the story to life on the big screen, saying, “Can’t wait to see the Taika Waititi film about this.
Who is playing Raygun??? Rita Ora, what do you think about executive producing with me?” Rita reshared the post, seemingly excited about the project.
The Viral Olympics Moment
Rachael Gunn, also known as “Raygun,” became an internet sensation after her unconventional breakdancing performance at the Paris Olympics.
Her routine, which featured moves like hopping like a kangaroo and sliding across the floor like a snake, led to an outpouring of ridicule.
Critics accused her of setting back the sport of breakdancing and turning herself into a global meme. However, her comedic display didn’t stop her from being ranked as the world’s number one breakdancer by the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF).
Controversial Rankings and Raygun’s Defense
The WDSF rankings, released in September, placed Raygun at the top spot despite her poor Olympic performance.
The rankings are based on an athlete’s top four performances from the past 12 months and did not include the Olympics due to limited athlete quotas.
While some fans were shocked by Raygun’s sudden rise, she defended her performance, attributing it to a “lack of resources” in Australia and emphasizing the diversity of styles in breakdancing.
During an appearance on The Project, Raygun explained, “Unfortunately, we need more resources in Australia to have a chance at beating world champions.”
She went on to say, “People aren’t familiar with the artistic style of breaking, and what I did wasn’t actually that shocking in the breaking community.”
A Break from Competition
Despite her newfound fame, Raygun revealed that she’s stepping away from competitive breakdancing for a while.
She admitted that the intense scrutiny surrounding her Olympic performance made it difficult for her to continue dancing, which had once been her escape.
“It turned into my source of stress,” she shared, hinting that a break from the spotlight may be exactly what she needs.
The Future of Raygun on the Big Screen?
With Rita Ora and Jodie Turner-Smith showing interest in producing a film about Raygun’s sudden rise to global fame, there’s a real possibility that her story could become a blockbuster. Fans of Taika Waititi’s unique and quirky storytelling style are eagerly waiting to see if this project takes off.
