Rory McIlroy reveals why he took a break from golf and discusses his reconciliation with wife Erica Stoll. The pro golfer shares insight into his personal life and future with his family.
BollywoodFever: Rory McIlroy has shared the reasons behind his recent break from golf, citing personal and professional challenges that led him to step away from the sport.
During a September 14 appearance on The Late Late Show, McIlroy, 35, explained that both his golf career and personal life had become overwhelming, prompting him to take a needed hiatus.
“There’s been a lot going on this year from golf-wise and then, obviously, personal-wise as well,” McIlroy told host Patrick Kielty. “Sometimes life can get a lot, and it can get too much, and I had to take a little bit of a break.”
McIlroy said that distancing himself from “the business of golf” allowed him to reassess his priorities, focusing more on his family and personal enjoyment. “What’s actually important to me is friends, family, [and] enjoying myself,” he said.
The pro golfer had announced in June that he would take time off from tournaments. Around the same time, McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, dismissed their plans for divorce.
McIlroy filed to end the proceedings in June, and the couple issued a statement indicating they had resolved their differences and were ready for a new beginning together.
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,” McIlroy said in a statement to The Guardian.
McIlroy and Stoll, who married in 2017, share a 3-year-old daughter, Poppy. While news of their potential separation surfaced in May, with McIlroy requesting joint custody of Poppy, the couple now seems to have reconciled and are focusing on their family.
With the separation behind him, McIlroy has returned to the golf course and is excited about spending time with his daughter.
He revealed that Poppy recently received her first set of real golf clubs, sparking a possible interest in following her father’s footsteps. “If she did [become a pro golfer], I would be 100 percent supportive,” McIlroy said, while adding he’d also be happy if she pursued a different path.
