Sabrina Carpenter releases a dark and twisted music video for “Taste,” featuring Jenna Ortega in a blood-soaked, Death Becomes Her-inspired showdown.
Bollywood Fever: Just hours after dropping her new album Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina Carpenter surprised fans with the release of the music video for her track “Taste” on Friday, August 23.
But this visual offering is far from sweet—it’s a Death Becomes Her-inspired bloodbath that takes viewers on a wild, darkly comedic ride, ultimately ending with an unexpected twist of friendship.
The video kicks off with Carpenter softly singing a sinister lullaby: “Rock-a-bye baby, snug in your bed/ Right now you are sleeping, and soon you’ll be dead.” She then sneaks into the home of her ex-boyfriend, wielding a machete, ready to exact her revenge on his new girlfriend, played by Jenna Ortega.
However, Ortega’s character has a surprise of her own—a decoy in the bed meant to trap Carpenter. What follows is a chaotic sequence where Ortega shoots Carpenter out of a second-story window, impaling her on a fence below.
The carnage doesn’t stop there. In a gory battle reminiscent of the 1992 Oscar-winning film Death Becomes Her, the two women continuously rise from the dead to continue their catfight.
They engage in battles with everything from hospital defibrillators to voodoo dolls, culminating in Ortega chopping off Carpenter’s arm during a bathroom brawl. But in a surprising twist, the video ends with a steamy makeout session between the two by the pool—right before Ortega accidentally kills their shared boyfriend with a chainsaw.
As Carpenter sings, “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true/ You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you,” the song’s lyrics mirror the twisted, humorous tone of the video.
The song’s message and the video’s events collide perfectly in the final scene, where the women, now united by their bizarre experience, share a laugh at their ex-lover’s funeral. “Very insecure,” Ortega quips about their former beau, to which Carpenter cackles, “Very insecure! You kill me.”
Directed by Dave Meyers, the “Taste” video is the third visual installment from Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet era, following the successful releases of “Espresso” and the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping “Please Please Please,” which featured her real-life boyfriend, actor Barry Keoghan. Short n’ Sweet marks Carpenter’s sixth studio album, continuing the momentum from her 2022 album Emails I Can’t Send, which peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard 200.
With its blend of dark humor, horror elements, and unexpected twists, “Taste” is a standout in Sabrina Carpenter’s evolving music career, leaving fans eager to see what she’ll do next.
