Controversies

Hit and Run Case

Salman Khan was arrested on September 28, 2002, for reckless and careless driving, resulting in his car colliding with a bakery in Mumbai. One person who was sleeping on the pavement outside the bakery died, and three others were injured in the accident. He was initially charged with culpable homicide, but the charges were later dropped. However, on July 24, 2013, he was officially charged with culpable homicide in the case and pleaded not guilty.

On May 6, 2015, Khan was found guilty of all charges in the case. The Bombay Sessions Court ruled that he had been driving the car under the influence of alcohol, causing the death of one person and serious injury to four homeless individuals. It was confirmed that Khan did not have a driving license until 2004.

Sessions Judge DW Deshpande convicted the actor of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to five years in prison. Later on the same day, Khan was granted bail by the Bombay High Court until May 8, 2015, and his prison sentence was suspended until the final appeal hearing in July. Khan’s driver, Ashok Singh, who had testified that he was driving the car at the time of the accident, was charged with perjury for providing false testimony and arrested.

The kidnapping and eventual death of prime witness police constable Ravindra Patil remains a mystery, with some suspecting the involvement of organized crime. In December 2015, Khan was acquitted of all charges in this case due to insufficient evidence.

However, on July 5, 2016, the Maharashtra government challenged Khan’s acquittal in the hit-and-run case, and the Supreme Court admitted the plea. The court refused to fast-track the case.

Relationship with Aishwarya Rai

The Indian media extensively covered Salman Khan’s romantic involvement with actress Aishwarya Rai. Their relationship ended in March 2002, after which Rai accused Khan of harassing her.

According to her, Khan could not accept their break-up and was persistently pursuing her. Rai’s parents filed a complaint against him. In 2005, the media released an unauthorized copy of a mobile phone call that the Mumbai police had supposedly recorded in 2001.

In the call, Khan appeared to threaten Rai, trying to coerce her into attending social events hosted by Mumbai’s criminal elements. He also made claims of having links to organized crime and derogatory remarks about other actors. However, the alleged recording was later determined to be a fake by the government’s Forensic lab in Chandigarh.

Blackbuck hunting and Arms Act violations cases

In 1998, while filming the movie Hum Saath-Saath Hain in the forests near Jodhpur, Salman Khan and his co-stars, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam, and Tabu, were accused of poaching a deer, which led to the filing of a case under the Wildlife (Protection) Act. Additionally, a case under sections 3/25 and 3/27 of the Arms Act was filed against Khan for allegedly using firearms with an expired license.

In February 2006, Khan was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting the endangered species Chinkara. However, the sentence was stayed on appeal. In April 2006, he was given a five-year jail term for the same offense and was granted bail after serving three days in jail.

In 2012, charges were finalized against Khan and his colleagues, and in 2014, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Khan on Rajasthan government’s plea challenging the High Court’s order suspending his conviction. However, Khan was acquitted in the blackbuck and chinkara poaching cases by the Rajasthan High Court in 2016.

In 2017, Khan was acquitted by a Jodhpur court in an Arms Act case linked to the killing of a blackbuck in Rajasthan. The court cited a lack of evidence against the actor.

In 2018, Khan was convicted in the blackbuck poaching case and was sentenced to five years imprisonment while his co-stars were acquitted. He was released on bail pending appeal.
