Senator Bob Menendez has been found guilty of bribery, extortion, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent. Learn about the charges, trial, and potential consequences.
Bollywood Fever: Senator Bob Menendez has been found guilty on all counts in his federal corruption trial. The jury delivered their verdict on Tuesday in a Manhattan courthouse, convicting the New Jersey Democrat on 16 counts, including bribery, extortion, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent.
Menendez was initially indicted in September for his alleged involvement in a bribery scheme, accused of using his influence as a U.S. Senator to benefit the Egyptian military. The indictment detailed that Menendez and his wife, Nadine, received various bribes, including gold bars, thousands of dollars in cash, and a Mercedes-Benz convertible.
In March of this year, Menendez faced additional charges of obstruction of justice. Alongside Menendez, businessmen Wael Hana and Fred Daibes were also found guilty. Menendez, who is running for re-election in New Jersey, now faces a maximum sentence of 222 years in prison, though he is expected to serve his sentences concurrently.
Nadine Menendez, also charged in the case, has had her trial postponed as she undergoes treatment for breast cancer. She has pleaded not guilty.
The verdict significantly impacts Menendez’s Senatorial race, where he faces challengers Andy Kim and Curtis Bashaw. Following the verdict, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for Menendez to resign from the Senate.
