Serena Williams reignites controversy over Harrison Butker’s commencement speech about women as homemakers during the 2024 ESPY Awards.
Bollywood Fever: Serena Williams reignited the controversy surrounding Harrison Butker‘s contentious commencement speech about women being homemakers while attending Thursday night’s 2024 ESPY Awards.
The incident occurred when the tennis legend took the stage with her sister, Venus Williams, and actress Quinta Brunson to honor women’s sports at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
During their address, Venus encouraged the audience to “enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports.” As Venus spoke, Serena initially giggled but then adopted a more serious tone, suddenly calling out the Kansas City Chiefs kicker: “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you.”
Brunson echoed Serena’s sentiment, adding, “At all. Like, ever.”
Earlier in the evening, Butker had been photographed arriving at the awards show in a suit and bow tie. It’s unclear how he reacted to Serena’s remarks.
The controversy stems from Butker’s commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas in May, where he encouraged female graduates to become homemakers and raise children. His speech drew immediate national backlash, particularly from professional women.
In his speech, Butker, a staunch Catholic, also denounced the LGBTQ community and criticized President Joe Biden’s pro-abortion stance. Despite the negative response, Butker defended his views, expressing his unwavering support for Catholicism and traditional American values.
Meanwhile, Serena, who hosted the ESPYs, also delivered a humorous monologue about WNBA phenom Caitlin Clark, saying, “You are the Larry Bird in that you are an amazing player, you have ties to Indiana, and white people are really crazy about you.
The night highlighted both Serena’s commitment to women’s sports and her willingness to address controversial topics head-on.
