NBA 2K25 rates Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at 96 overall. We explore whether this rating is justified, too high, or too low compared to other top players.
Bollywood Fever: “NBA 2K” recently unveiled its top 10 player ratings for the upcoming release of “NBA 2K25,” sparking the usual debates among fans about who was rated too high or too low.
Among the elite players once again is Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who earned a 96 overall rating.
This places the 26-year-old behind last season’s NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, fellow point guard Luka Doncic, and one-time NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo, all of whom tied for the top spot with a 97 overall rating.
The question on everyone’s mind: Did Shai deserve the one-point boost to tie for the top-rated player in the game? Should his rating have been a few points lower, or is it just right?
According to Bleacher Report writer Andy Bailey, the rating is spot on. “And while it was once fair to wonder if his free throw-heavy attack would translate to the postseason, it may not be now,” Bailey wrote. He highlighted Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive performance in the playoffs, where he averaged 30.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.3 steals in his first postseason run in this role. Despite the Thunder being knocked out in the second round, Shai rarely appeared rattled by the intensity of playoff basketball. With that experience under his belt, Bailey believes Shai’s steady offense and aggressive defense could put him back into the MVP conversation.
Fan reactions to NBA 2K ratings are often intense, especially in the lead-up to the game’s release. While these ratings reflect a player’s performance from the previous NBA season, they can be adjusted throughout the year based on how they play.
For instance, Shai started the 2023-24 season with a 93 overall rating in “NBA 2K24.” As the season progressed and his performance excelled, his rating climbed to a 97 overall by the end of the year.
You might wonder why his rating dropped by one point for NBA 2K25. The game’s rating system is recalibrated annually, relative to the other top players. Jokic, who began the 2023-24 season with a 98 overall rating, is now also rated 97 in NBA 2K25.
Another standout season could easily see Shai’s rating rise back to 97. If he manages to secure his first league MVP or even an NBA championship, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander could be looking at the highest rating in next year’s edition of NBA 2K.
