South African police killed six murder and extortion suspects in a shootout in Durban. The suspects were linked to recent execution-style killings and the illicit drug trade.
Bollywood Fever: Six individuals wanted for murder and extortion were killed in a shootout with South African police in Durban late Monday, authorities confirmed.
The suspects were connected to a series of brutal crimes, including a triple murder on Friday and the execution-style killing of four people on Sunday.
The confrontation occurred at a rented holiday apartment near Durban’s South Beach district, where police had tracked the suspects following Sunday’s killings.
During the incident, the suspects exchanged gunfire with the police, leading to their deaths, according to a police statement on Tuesday.
South Africa is grappling with one of the highest murder rates globally, with police data revealing an average of 68 murders per day between April and June this year.
The suspects were also believed to be involved in the illicit drug trade, further compounding their criminal activities.
The police had been pursuing them since Sunday, when they allegedly ordered their victims to lie down before executing them with shots to the back of the head.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to address lawmakers later on Tuesday regarding the country’s escalating extortion problem, a growing concern in a nation already plagued by high levels of violent crime.
