The San Antonio Spurs waive Jamaree Bouyea, creating an opportunity to fill the final two-way contract spot. Riley Minix, Malachi Flynn, and Brandon Boston Jr. emerge as top contenders.

BollywoodFever: The San Antonio Spurs have waived point guard Jamaree Bouyea, opening up their third and final two-way contract spot for the upcoming season.

Bouyea, who appeared in three games for the Spurs and previously had stints with several NBA teams, now leaves a vacancy that will likely be filled by a player who will split their time between the G League’s Austin Spurs and San Antonio.

Three players have emerged as frontrunners to take Bouyea’s spot: Riley Minix, Malachi Flynn, and Brandon Boston Jr. Each brings a unique skill set that could contribute to the Spurs, depending on the team’s needs.

  • Malachi Flynn: At 26, Flynn is a proven microwave scorer who has shown flashes of brilliance, including a 50-point performance against the Atlanta Hawks. However, his efficiency, particularly from deep (33.1% from three in 2023-24), has raised concerns.
  • Brandon Boston Jr.: A long, athletic wing who spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, Boston brings defensive potential but is not much of a threat from beyond the arc, shooting just 26.9% from three last season.
  • Riley Minix: An undrafted rookie from Morehead State, Minix impressed during the Summer League despite a shoulder injury. In his final three games, he averaged 12 points and shot 50% from three. His 35% three-point shooting in college, paired with his competitive edge, makes him an intriguing option as the tough, X-factor type player the Spurs might covet.

Statistically, here’s a comparison of their 2023-24 season performances:

Boston Jr. (NBA)5.20.41.640.4%26.9%

With 37 days until the start of the season, the Spurs have ample time to make their decision, but based on recent performances and team needs, Riley Minix appears to be the leading candidate for the two-way spot. His blend of shooting ability, physicality, and competitive drive could bring the spark the Spurs are looking for in a versatile role player.
