Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announces veteran QB Russell Wilson will start against the Buffalo Bills if his calf injury doesn’t flare up. Wilson is in his first season with the Steelers after being released by the Denver Broncos.
Bollywood Fever: Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced Thursday that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is expected to start Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills, provided he doesn’t suffer any setbacks with his calf injury. Wilson, who joined the Steelers this season after being released by the Denver Broncos, has been dealing with the injury since the eve of the team’s first training camp practice.
Wilson’s calf issue has kept him out of practice and sidelined him during the Steelers’ preseason opener against the Houston Texans. The 35-year-old quarterback, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, is entering his first season with the Steelers after being released just two years into a five-year, $245 million contract with Denver.
Despite his injury, Wilson remains the frontrunner to secure the starting quarterback position over Justin Fields, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears. Fields started against the Texans in Wilson’s absence but struggled, getting sacked twice and fumbling twice in the 20-12 loss.
During joint practices with the Bills, Wilson and Fields split first-team reps, with Wilson expressing confidence that his injury won’t affect his performance. “I don’t play with fear,” Wilson stated on Wednesday. “I never have… I don’t strap on the pads and just get ready to go and play fearful. Anybody knows me, I don’t think that way. So I’ll be ready to rock and roll if that’s the case.”
Wilson is entering his 13th NFL season, having spent his first decade with the Seattle Seahawks. During his time in Seattle, he led the team to two Super Bowl appearances and secured the franchise’s only league title in Super Bowl XLVIII. After moving to Denver, Wilson had a challenging two seasons, ending with an 11-19 record in 30 starts and being benched by head coach Sean Payton for the final two games of the 2023 season.
Throughout his career, Wilson has passed for 43,653 yards with 334 touchdowns and 106 interceptions across 188 games. Steelers fans are eagerly awaiting his debut in black and gold, hoping he can bring his winning experience to Pittsburgh this season.
