Strictly Come Dancing star Sam Quek opens up about her challenges with ‘sexy’ routines, her competitive spirit, and her support for the show amid recent controversies.
BollywoodFever: Sam Quek, the Olympic hockey star and one of the latest contestants on Strictly Come Dancing, has revealed she’s finding it tough to embrace the more seductive side of the competition.
Speaking on The Mirror’s Invite Only podcast, Quek, 35, confessed, “I’m not sexy. I can’t do the sexy eyes or body language.” She even joked about how her husband, Tom Mairs, 38, commented on her attempt at a sultry look during an appearance on BBC Breakfast, texting her, “Almost.”
Quek, who married Mairs in 2018, gushed about their close bond, calling him her best friend and biggest supporter. Despite the upcoming challenge, she is approaching the show with enthusiasm and competitiveness. “I’m competitive. Of course, you want to win the glitterball trophy,” she said, though she admits that her lack of dance experience will be a hurdle.
The former GB hockey player is taking the opportunity to learn and grow from her time on the show. “It’s amazing to be in this situation, to be taught how to dance by a pro… I’m here to have a good time and to learn to dance,” she added.
In light of recent controversies surrounding Strictly, including accusations of bullying, Quek remained supportive of the show, saying it shouldn’t take away from the positives. Referring to the ongoing scandal involving Amanda Abbington and dancer Giovanni Pernice, she stated, “There’s two sides to the truth… it shouldn’t take the shine off Strictly. It’s a fantastic programme.”
With 125 caps playing hockey for England and Great Britain, Quek is no stranger to competition, and she’s determined to give it her all, even if the sexy routines are outside her comfort zone.
