India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav is aiming to reclaim his Test spot by playing first-class cricket, as India prepares for a busy Test schedule, including series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia.
Bollywood Fever: India’s Twenty20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is looking to improve his chances of reclaiming a spot in the Test squad by returning to first-class cricket.
The 33-year-old cricketer, who plays a pivotal role in India’s white-ball teams, stepped into the T20 captaincy after Rohit Sharma stepped down following India’s World Cup triumph in June.
Suryakumar made his Test debut against Australia last year but has since struggled to secure a consistent place in the squad, largely due to a groin injury and stiff competition in the middle order.
Reflecting on his position, Suryakumar acknowledged the challenge of breaking back into the Test side.
“There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place, and even I want to earn that spot again,” Suryakumar said during a domestic tournament on Monday. “There were a lot of people who got an opportunity and have done well too. They deserve that opportunity right now.”
India’s upcoming Test schedule includes 10 matches over the next four months, with five of them taking place in Australia.
With players like Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, and KL Rahul all vying for a middle-order spot, Suryakumar understands the challenge ahead.
“That’s not in my control,” Suryakumar said regarding his chances of selection. “What’s in my power right now is to play the Buchi Babu tournament, go on to play the Duleep Trophy, and then see what happens.”
Despite the uncertainty, Suryakumar remains optimistic and eager to make his mark in the red-ball format. “But yes, I’m really looking forward. There are 10 Test matches lined up, and I’m obviously excited for some red-ball fun.”
India’s Test campaign begins on September 19 with two home matches against Bangladesh, followed by three against New Zealand. The team will then travel to Australia in November for a highly anticipated series, where Suryakumar hopes to be part of the action.
As he embarks on his first-class cricket journey, Suryakumar Yadav is determined to prove himself and earn a place in India’s Test squad, adding another chapter to his already impressive cricketing career.
