Sweden plans to raise its defense budget by $1.3 billion in 2025, increasing military spending to 2.4% of GDP as it strengthens its NATO role following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
BollywoodFever: Sweden is set to significantly boost its military spending, increasing its defense budget by 13 billion crowns ($1.3 billion) in 2025, bringing the total to 138 billion crowns, according to Defence Minister Pal Jonson.
The defense budget will rise to 2.4% of GDP in 2025, up from 2.2% this year, with projections to reach 2.6% by 2028, Jonson revealed during a press conference on Tuesday.
This move comes in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which prompted a historic shift in Sweden’s defense policy.
Once a neutral country, Sweden formally joined NATO in 2023, committing to further enhance its military capabilities.
The center-right government coalition, which relies on support from the Sweden Democrats, will submit the 2025 budget bill to parliament on September 19.
