The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are adapting to Liam Coen’s complex offensive system, showing promising results in preseason as they prepare for the 2024 NFL season with high hopes.
Bollywood Fever: This offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive players have been hard at work mastering Liam Coen’s intricate system. Throughout training camp, players frequently described the scheme as “hard” and “complex,” but the first drive against the Miami Dolphins in Tampa Bay’s third preseason game demonstrated just how effective it can be when everything falls into place.
The Buccaneers’ offense didn’t achieve such efficiency overnight—it took months of rigorous learning and adaptation to reach the level of performance displayed against Miami. For wide receiver Chris Godwin, the complexity of the scheme was evident, highlighting the steep learning curve that the team faced this offseason.
“I would say there’s a lot more plays, but our responsibilities on those plays are also more as well,” Godwin explained. “So the learning curve is a little bit steeper, but I think that it’s set so that once you get like the base of it, you’re able to like interchange a bunch of pieces so it’s not like we have to come up with new plays in order to get different matchups.”
As the Buccaneers enter the 2024 season with a new offensive scheme and lingering questions about quarterback Baker Mayfield’s ability to replicate his 2023 Pro Bowl form, the team is flying somewhat under the radar. However, despite the skepticism, Tampa Bay possesses genuine weapons on both sides of the ball that can make a significant impact.
The offense is expected to feature a lot of moving parts, with some plays designed to look similar but executed differently. This will place considerable responsibility on Mayfield at the line of scrimmage. Still, the way the offense functioned against the Dolphins should instill confidence in Coen and his players as they prepare for Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.
We’re eager to see how the Buccaneers’ offense performs when the real NFL action begins in just two weeks.
