The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released Randy Gregory after he failed to report to training camp. Gregory’s absence follows a legal dispute with the NFL over THC-related fines.
Bollywood Fever: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially released edge rusher Randy Gregory after he failed to report to the team’s training camp, coach Todd Bowles announced on Sunday.
Gregory, who had been placed on the reserve/did not report list on July 23, never provided an explanation for his absence.
Bowles addressed the situation, stating, “I wish him the best. We’ll move on from there. You can’t miss what you never had.” Gregory, 31, had previously signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Buccaneers during free agency but did not participate in the team’s voluntary offseason program or the mandatory minicamp earlier this summer.
Gregory’s off-field challenges have also drawn attention, as he filed a lawsuit in June against the NFL and the Denver Broncos, alleging discrimination.
The lawsuit claims Gregory was fined $532,500 for using medication containing THC, which he was prescribed for social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders during his brief stint with the Broncos.
Gregory argued that the league’s refusal to accommodate his medical needs was discriminatory under Colorado law.
While the NFL no longer suspends players who test positive for THC, the substance remains banned, and players can still be fined for violations.
Gregory’s lawsuit highlights ongoing tensions regarding the league’s substance policies, particularly concerning the use of THC for medical purposes.
Gregory, a second-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015, has had a tumultuous NFL career marked by multiple suspensions for violating the league’s drug policies.
He played five seasons with the Cowboys before signing with Denver in 2022, where a knee injury limited his playing time. Gregory was traded to the San Francisco 49ers during the 2023 season, splitting his time between the Broncos and 49ers.
Over his seven-season NFL career, Gregory has appeared in 72 games, recording 22 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, and 69 quarterback hits.
Despite his on-field potential, his career has been marred by off-field issues and injuries, culminating in his recent release by the Buccaneers.
