Taylor Swift clears the air about rumors of tension with Charli XCX, praising the singer’s talent and addressing fan speculation around Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife.”
Bollywood Fever: Taylor Swift is putting rumors to rest after Charli XCX’s recent song “Sympathy Is a Knife” sparked speculation about possible tension between the two pop stars.
The third track on Charli’s latest album, Brat, had fans wondering if it was referencing Swift, especially due to lyrics about feeling anxiety around another woman who was backstage at 1975 shows.
At the time, Swift was dating the band’s lead singer, Matty Healy.
In a new feature in New York Magazine, Swift was asked about Charli and responded with nothing but admiration.
“I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011,” Swift said. “Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.”
Charli, for her part, chose not to delve into the specifics of the song in the interview.
“People are gonna think what they want to think,” she said. “That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”
The speculation around “Sympathy Is a Knife” isn’t the first time fans have read into the relationship between the two artists.
Charli opened for Swift on her 2018 Reputation stadium tour, but later described the experience in a 2019 Pitchfork interview by saying, “As an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up onstage and waving to 5-year-olds.” She later apologized to Swift’s fanbase for the comment.
Despite the rumors, Swift’s recent comments make it clear that she holds Charli in high regard, praising her creativity and hard work in the music industry.
