Jordan Chiles files an appeal in Swiss court to overturn a controversial decision that cost her the bronze medal in the Olympic floor routine. Learn more about the legal fight.
BollywoodFever: Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles is pushing forward in her legal battle to reclaim her bronze medal, filing an appeal in the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland. Chiles is seeking to overturn the ruling made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding her floor routine results at the Olympics.
Chiles’ legal team issued a statement on Monday, highlighting two major flaws in the handling of the CAS decision. First, they argue that Chiles’ “right to be heard” was denied when CAS refused to review video evidence proving that the inquiry into her score was submitted on time.
The second issue centers on CAS President Hamid G. Gharavi, who allegedly had a “serious conflict of interest” due to his role as counsel for Romania, even actively representing the country during arbitration.
Given these undeniable deficiencies, Chiles asks the Federal Supreme Court to reinstate the score that she rightfully earned at the floor event final,” the statement reads.
The controversy arose when Chiles’ floor routine score was reduced from 13.766 to 13.666, moving her from third to fifth place and awarding Romania’s Ana Barbosu the bronze medal instead.
CAS initially ruled that Team USA’s coach missed the objection window by just four seconds, though the floor judges accepted the inquiry at the time.
Chiles’ team also criticized the arbitration process, noting she was given just a few hours’ notice before her hearing began. They described the procedure as “fundamentally unfair” and “flawed.”
Chiles’ battle has garnered support from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, with her appeal seeking more than just the bronze medal.
“This appeal is about much more than the bronze medal,” the statement concluded. Chiles is pursuing her case to encourage the entire Olympic community to ensure future Olympians do not face a similar ordeal.
