French EU Commissioner Thierry Breton resigns from the European Commission, citing governance concerns after being asked to withdraw his name for a more influential portfolio.
BollywoodFever: French European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton abruptly resigned from the bloc’s executive body on Monday, sharing a picture of his resignation letter addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on social media platform X.
In the letter, Breton revealed that von der Leyen had asked France “a few days ago” to withdraw his name as the country’s representative for the Commission “for personal reasons” in exchange for an “allegedly more influential portfolio.”
Considering these latest developments, which further highlight questionable governance, I must conclude that I can no longer continue my duties in the College,” Breton wrote in his resignation letter.
His decision comes as von der Leyen finalizes her list of EU commissioners following this summer’s elections. While each EU member state is entitled to one seat on the Commission, the political influence of each member varies greatly depending on their assigned portfolio.
At the time of the announcement, neither the French presidency nor von der Leyen’s office was available for comment.
