Tom Brady’s NFL broadcasting debut on Fox has garnered mixed reviews, with praise for his intelligence but criticism of his delivery. Here’s what viewers are saying.
BollywoodFever: After making his long-awaited NFL broadcasting debut for Fox during Week 1 of the 2024 season, Tom Brady has received a mixed reception from fans and industry professionals alike.
The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, known for his legendary career on the field, is now adjusting to life in the broadcast booth.
While some viewers have applauded his calm demeanor and football intelligence, others have expressed concerns about his delivery.
NFL Network reporter Jane Slater has been among those offering praise for Brady’s approach. She described him as “smart” and appreciated that he isn’t “pressing and screaming with faux excitement,” a style often associated with modern-day sports commentary.
Slater’s remarks reflect the appreciation some fans have for Brady’s laid-back, analytical style.
However, not all reviews have been positive. ESPN reporter and broadcaster Don Van Natta Jr. recently shared his blunt opinion on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his dissatisfaction with Brady’s commentary. “Tom Brady’s problem—and ours—is his voice,” Van Natta said, noting that Brady’s delivery is “mildly annoying to nails-on-a-chalkboard.” Van Natta also suggested that Brady’s commentary lacks depth, criticizing him for narrating obvious plays rather than providing in-depth analysis.
Van Natta further commented on Brady’s pairing with play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt, whose “magisterial voice” contrasts with Brady’s more subdued tone.
In a follow-up post, Van Natta shared a “Captain Obvious” meme, implying that Brady’s analysis has so far been surface-level.
While Brady has faced criticism, it’s important to remember that he’s still new to the booth, with only three games under his belt.
Viewers can’t expect him to master broadcasting immediately, and many believe he’ll improve with more experience.
So far, Brady has not responded to Van Natta’s critique. However, given how he shrugged off previous comments from Scott Hanson about his Week 1 performance, it’s unlikely Brady is letting the criticism affect him.
As the 2024 NFL season progresses, fans and broadcasters alike will be watching closely to see how Brady continues to adapt and refine his skills as a commentator.
