Edgar Lansbury, a Tony-winning producer and brother of the late TV & Film star Angela Lansbury, has passed away, as confirmed by a post from one of his former stars.
Peggy Gordon, who appeared in the original off-Broadway cast of “Godspell,” shared the news on Facebook earlier this week. She did not disclose the cause of death but mentioned that his memorial would be held in the fall.
Born in London in 1930, Edgar first gained prominence on Broadway in the early 1960s with his production of “The Subject Was Roses,” starring Martin Sheen, which won him the Tony Award for Best Play.
He went on to produce several successful shows, including “Godspell,” “American Buffalo,” “Gypsy,” “Waiting for Godot,” and “Lennon.” Edgar also ventured into the film and TV industry with adaptations of “The Subject Was Roses” and “Godspell.”
While Edgar had a notable career in his own right, many would recognize him as Angela’s younger brother. Angela’s success in Hollywood led Edgar and his twin brother, Bruce, to Los Angeles, where he attended UCLA and eventually transitioned to producing. Angela passed away in 2022.
In 2020, Edgar authored a book titled “The Magic of Believing: A Lansbury Family Memoir,” which featured stories about Angela and focused on their mother Charlotte’s unwavering belief.
Edgar is survived by his wife Louise Peabody and his six children.
