The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly seeking to strengthen their left-wing options before the new season, with speculation around potential signings like Max Pacioretty and James van Riemsdyk.
Bollywood Fever: The Toronto Maple Leafs could be making moves to bolster their forward lineup before the upcoming NHL season, with a particular focus on adding depth at the left-wing position.
According to Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, there is a strong possibility that the Leafs will seek to address this area in the near future.
In his recent 32 Thoughts column, Friedman highlighted the team’s interest in exploring left-wing options, noting that there is a “percolating” sense of activity surrounding this need. “I think there are things percolating out there, including Toronto considering left-wing options,” Friedman wrote on August 25.
The Maple Leafs currently face some uncertainty within their bottom-six forward group, particularly following the departure of free agent Tyler Bertuzzi and the ongoing situation with Nick Robertson, who remains unsigned and has reportedly requested a trade.
Internally, the Leafs have several candidates who could fill the left-wing role, including Pontus Holmberg and Connor Dewar.
Additionally, Max Domi, currently projected as the third-line center, could shift to the left wing if necessary.
There are also promising rookies like Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten, though it’s unclear if they will be ready to step into NHL roles by the start of the season.
Externally, the Leafs may look to sign a veteran forward to strengthen their roster. Two notable names still available in free agency are Max Pacioretty and James van Riemsdyk.
According to Daily Faceoff, several teams, including Toronto, have shown interest in Pacioretty, with a decision on his future expected soon.
Pacioretty has received offers from “at least three teams,” making him a sought-after addition for teams looking to boost their scoring depth.
James van Riemsdyk, who previously spent six seasons with the Maple Leafs, remains a viable option as well.
Van Riemsdyk continues to be a productive player, posting 38 points in 71 games for the Boston Bruins last season.
As of August 26, he is ranked as the top remaining free agent on Daily Faceoff‘s updated board.
However, the Maple Leafs face a significant challenge in making any new additions, as they currently have only $1.27 million in available cap space.
This limited cap flexibility means that if the team decides to sign a free agent before the regular season begins, they will need to be strategic in their approach to stay within budget.
As the new season approaches, Toronto fans will be watching closely to see how the Maple Leafs address their roster needs and whether they can secure the right pieces to enhance their playoff aspirations.
