At least 19 people, including a child, have died in multiple landslides in Kerala, India. Heavy rains and poor internet connectivity are hampering ongoing rescue efforts.
Kerala, Bollywood Fever: At least 19 people have died following multiple landslides in the hills of Kerala, India’s southern state, on Tuesday, as reported by local media. The heavy rain and poor internet connectivity are significantly hampering rescue efforts, with hundreds of people potentially trapped.
The Indian Express newspaper reported that among the deceased is a child. Television visuals showed scenes of devastation, with water gushing through rocks and fallen trees, destroying many houses.
“The situation is serious. The government has pressed all agencies into rescue,” stated state Forest Minister A K Saseendran in an interview with Reuters.
The India Meteorological Department has forecasted extremely heavy rain in the state on Tuesday, exacerbating the already dire situation.
Relief efforts are ongoing, with two helicopters of the Indian Air Force mobilized, according to a statement from the Kerala chief minister’s office. However, rescue operations are hindered by the lack of internet connectivity in the affected areas, as noted by Mohsen Shahedi, a senior National Disaster Response Force officer.
The challenging conditions are complicating efforts to reach and assist those trapped by the landslides. The local and national authorities are working tirelessly to provide aid and rescue to the affected individuals.
