BollywoodFever: Two passengers on United Airlines Flight 2428 were injured last week when the aircraft had to make a sudden maneuver to avoid a midair collision near San Francisco.
The Boeing 757-200, en route from Newark Liberty International Airport to San Francisco, received an alert from the traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) around 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The TCAS alert, triggered by nearby aircraft in the Oakland Air Route Traffic Control Center Airspace, instructed the pilot to adjust the plane’s descent.
Such maneuvers are considered a “last defense against mid-air collisions,” according to the National Business Aviation Association.
United Airlines stated that while the aircraft was descending with the seat belt sign on, it slowed its descent to avoid the other aircraft at a lower altitude.
Unfortunately, two passengers were injured, one of whom was out of their seat at the time. Both were transported to a hospital, though details about their injuries remain unknown.
The FAA confirmed that the plane landed safely at San Francisco International Airport and is currently investigating the incident.
No information has been released regarding the other aircraft involved in the near collision.
