Two oil tankers, Hafnia Nile and Ceres I, catch fire near Singapore’s Pedra Branca. Search and rescue operations are underway as Singapore’s navy and air force provide assistance.
Singapore, Bollywood Fever: Two oil tankers have caught fire approximately 55 km (34 miles) northeast of the Singaporean island of Pedra Branca, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported on Friday.
The MPA was alerted to the fire at 6:15 a.m. local time (2215 GMT) on both the Singapore-flagged tanker Hafnia Nile and the Sao Tome and Principe-flagged tanker Ceres I. The port authority has requested assistance from passing vessels for the search and rescue of the crew, while a Singapore navy ship and air force helicopter are also providing support.
The Panamax tanker Hafnia Nile (IMO 9766217) was carrying naphtha, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler and LSEG. It is not immediately clear what fuel the very-large-crude-carrier (VLCC) Ceres I (IMO 9229439) was carrying, although it was last recorded carrying Iranian crude between March and April, based on ship-tracking data.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to secure the safety of the crew and contain the situation. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
