Tyler O’Neill homers twice as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 7-5, handing Chicago their 111th loss of the season. Red Sox chase AL Wild Card spot.
Bollywood Fever: Tyler O’Neill delivered two home runs as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-5 on Saturday night.
The victory handed the White Sox their 111th loss of the season, continuing a historically difficult year for Chicago.
Despite Andrew Vaughn’s two-run homer in the first inning, Chicago fell behind 7-2 by the fifth inning and ultimately dropped their 19th consecutive series.
The White Sox (32-111) are inching closer to the dubious distinction of tying the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in modern baseball history.
They are on pace for a 36-126 finish, which would be the worst since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders’ 20-134 record.
O’Neill’s performance included a two-run homer in the first inning and a towering shot over Fenway Park’s Green Monster in the fifth, bringing his season total to 27 home runs. It was O’Neill’s 11th career multi-homer game and his sixth this season.
Rob Refsnyder and Connor Wong also contributed offensively for Boston (72-70), with Wong hitting an RBI double in the first inning. Trevor Story, in his first game back since April after shoulder surgery, added an RBI single.
The Red Sox are now chasing Minnesota (76-66) for the AL’s final wild card berth, having snapped a five-game losing streak with their second consecutive win.
Kenley Jansen locked down the win with his 26th save of the season, marking the 446th save of his career. Boston’s victory also clinched their first season series win over the White Sox since 2019.
On the mound, rookie right-hander Cooper Criswell (6-4) pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Chicago’s Garrett Crochet (6-11) struggled, dropping to 0-6 in his last 15 starts since his June win over Boston.
White Sox Struggles Continue
Chicago’s woes continued despite Andrew Benintendi’s three-run homer in the seventh inning. The former Red Sox outfielder’s 16th homer of the season wasn’t enough to lift the White Sox, who have lost 14 of their last 15 games and 44 of their last 49.
Boston’s Yellow Jerseys Magic
Boston improved to 35-13 when donning their yellow alternate jerseys, including an 8-6 record this season. The jerseys have become a good-luck charm for the team, contributing to their strong play.
