Typhoon Ampil disrupts travel and prompts evacuation orders near Tokyo, affecting thousands as Japan braces for fierce winds and power outages during a major holiday week.
Tokyo, Bollywood Fever: Japan is grappling with the impact of Typhoon Ampil, which has prompted widespread flight cancellations, evacuation orders, and power outages as the powerful storm approaches the Tokyo area during the peak of a major summer holiday week. The typhoon, categorized as “very strong” by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), has led to significant disruptions across the Kanto region, including the capital.
As of Friday morning, Typhoon Ampil was located off the Pacific coast of Japan’s main island and was expected to make its way towards the eastern Kanto region by the afternoon. The storm is packing winds of 45 meters per second, with maximum gusts reaching 60 meters per second (216 kph/134 mph), making it a formidable threat.
The JMA issued warnings for the Kanto region, cautioning residents about the potential for severe winds capable of causing injuries from flying debris and even overturning vehicles. Local authorities have responded by placing evacuation orders and opening shelters. Mobara City in Chiba Prefecture issued an evacuation order affecting approximately 18,500 residents, while other cities have advised voluntary evacuations and prepared special evacuation centers.
The storm has also caused widespread power outages, with over 2,000 households in the Kanto area experiencing blackouts on Friday morning. Although power was restored in some areas, the threat of further disruptions remains.
The travel sector has been heavily impacted by the typhoon. ANA Holdings announced the cancellation of 281 domestic flights and 54 international flights scheduled for Friday, affecting nearly 70,000 passengers. Similarly, Japan Airlines has canceled 281 domestic and 38 international flights, impacting about 50,000 passengers. In addition, all high-speed “Shinkansen” bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya have been canceled, further complicating travel plans during the holiday period.
As Typhoon Ampil continues its approach, residents and travelers in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
