Typhoon Shanshan Hits Southwestern Japan, Causing Widespread Damage and Power Outages

Typhoon Shanshan makes landfall in Japan’s Kagoshima prefecture, causing widespread power outages, injuries, and disrupting transportation. Evacuation orders issued for millions.

Bollywood Fever: Southwestern Japan was battered by heavy rain and powerful winds on Thursday as Typhoon Shanshan made landfall in Kagoshima prefecture, leading to widespread power outages and injuries across the region.

The typhoon, classified as ‘strong,’ brought gusts of up to 216 km per hour (134 mph), striking near Satsumasendai city on the island of Kyushu early Thursday morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Authorities have warned that Shanshan could be one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the region, prompting local governments to issue evacuation orders for millions of residents across several prefectures.

As of the latest reports, one person is missing, and 39 people have been injured in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures.

Footage from public broadcaster NHK showed significant damage in Miyazaki, including torn walls, broken windows, and debris scattered across streets and hanging from utility poles.

Over 250,000 households in seven prefectures were without power as of 9:00 a.m. on Thursday (0000 GMT), according to Kyushu Electric Power Co.

The storm is expected to continue affecting Kyushu over the next few days before potentially moving towards central and eastern Japan, including Tokyo, around the weekend.

The impact of Typhoon Shanshan has been felt across various sectors. Major automakers, including Toyota and Nissan, have suspended operations at some or all of their domestic factories for Thursday due to the storm.

Airlines such as ANA Holdings and Japan Airlines have canceled more than 600 domestic flights, while train services have been halted in many parts of Kyushu.

Typhoon Shanshan is the latest in a series of severe weather events to hit Japan, following closely on the heels of Typhoon Ampil, which also caused widespread blackouts and evacuations earlier this month.
