Ukrainian air forces destroy a strategic bridge in Russia’s Kursk region, disrupting Russian supply lines as Kyiv’s forces advance, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
Canada, Bollywood Fever: Ukrainian air forces have destroyed a key strategic bridge over the Seym River in Russia’s Kursk region, further disrupting the supply lines of Russian forces opposing Ukraine’s recent advances, according to Ukraine’s commander Mykola Oleshchuk.
The strike is part of Ukraine’s ongoing offensive, which began with a surprise cross-border assault on August 6, the largest invasion of Russian territory since World War II.
Since the offensive began, Ukraine claims to have seized over 80 settlements covering more than 1,150 square kilometers (444 square miles) in the Kursk region.
The latest strike on the bridge, which Oleshchuk announced on the Telegram messaging app, marks the second such attack in the area since Friday. Oleshchuk shared a video showing the aftermath of the explosion, with a significant portion of the bridge destroyed.
“The Ukrainian Air Force continues to deprive the enemy of logistical capabilities with precision airstrikes, significantly affecting the course of hostilities,” Oleshchuk stated.
While Reuters was able to confirm the location of the bridge in the village of Zvannoye in the Kursk region, the agency could not independently verify the timing or full extent of the damage.
Russian officials have not yet responded to Ukraine’s reports, but some Russian military bloggers have acknowledged the attack.
The prominent War Gonzo project and others reported that the bridge was heavily damaged but did not collapse entirely, with some reports suggesting it remains passable for pedestrians and light vehicles.
The destruction of this bridge follows earlier attacks on other critical infrastructure in the region. Military analysts noted that three key bridges in the area are vital for Russian supply routes, two of which have now been either destroyed or severely damaged by Ukrainian forces.
The situation on the battlefield in Kursk was described as “relatively calm” by pro-Russian military blogger Yuri Podolyaka, who stated that Ukrainian forces appeared to be regrouping.
However, he warned that Ukraine might soon attempt to take control of another strategic bridge over the Psyol River, which is crucial for either further advancement or defensive positioning by Kyiv’s forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian forces involved in the Kursk operation and on the eastern front, urging Ukraine’s allies to expedite the delivery of promised military aid. “Our operation in the Kursk region is still inflicting losses on the Russian army and the Russian state,” Zelenskiy said in a televised address. He stressed the urgency of accelerated military support, stating, “War has no holidays.”
In response to Ukraine’s incursion, Russia has labeled the offensive a significant provocation, vowing to retaliate with what it describes as a “worthy response.”
This escalation comes more than two and a half years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, further intensifying the conflict between the two nations.
