Valve’s “Deadlock” hero shooter hits 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, even while in an invite-only beta. Discover why this unreleased game is already a massive hit.
Bollywood Fever: Valve’s latest hero shooter, Deadlock, has become a certified hit on Steam, remarkably crossing the 100,000 concurrent player mark while still in an invite-only phase. According to data from the player tracking website SteamDB, Deadlock reached this milestone on August 29, 2024, with exactly 106,447 players online simultaneously. The game’s popularity has been steadily climbing throughout August, with numbers expected to rise even further as the weekend approaches.
What makes Deadlock‘s success particularly intriguing is that the game hasn’t officially launched yet. Valve initially kept the game under wraps for weeks, even though SteamDB showed thousands of players were already online.
Released in a beta or playtesting equivalent state, Deadlock remains exclusive, with access granted only by direct invitation from Valve or referral by an existing player. Early participants were asked to “not share anything about the game with anyone.”
However, Valve has recently acknowledged the game’s existence by removing that request and unveiling its official Steam page.
The page describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development,” keeping details somewhat vague.
Deadlock is a six-versus-six, third-person hero shooter with a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) twist, drawing inspiration from genre-defining games like League of Legends, Dota 2, and Heroes of the Storm.
Despite the game’s “invite-only” status, its growing player base suggests that this exclusivity may soon become a thing of the past.
Valve has yet to announce when the game will be open to all players or when a full release might occur.
However, as the player count continues to soar, the game’s invite-only phase seems increasingly symbolic rather than restrictive.
