Vietnam’s president and Communist Party chief To Lam plans to meet with U.S. tech giants Google and Meta during his visit to the United States, highlighting growing business ties between the nations.
BollywoodFever: To Lam, Vietnam’s president and Communist Party chief, is scheduled to meet with representatives from Google and Meta during his upcoming visit to the United States next week, according to sources familiar with the plans. This will be Lam’s first visit to the U.S. since assuming his position in early August, as head of the country’s ruling party.
Meta’s Facebook counts Vietnam, a country of 100 million people, as one of its largest global user bases. Google, which manufactures its smartphones in Vietnam through suppliers, has plans to build a large data center in the country, according to a previous Reuters report.
Lam is expected to hold separate meetings with both Google and Meta representatives, though the details of the discussions have not been disclosed. Additionally, Lam is set to attend a business forum on September 23, where he will engage with other U.S. business leaders.
The US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) is co-organizing the event, and in recent business missions to Vietnam, it has brought top U.S. companies like Boeing, Mastercard, and Amazon to the region. Vietnam has become a major manufacturing hub for U.S. firms, including Apple and Intel, as well as a key market for defense and tech products.
U.S.-Vietnam Relations Strengthen
This trip follows growing diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Vietnam, with Washington seeking to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing. The U.S. also aims to collaborate with Vietnam in critical industries like undersea cables.
While it’s unclear if Lam will meet U.S. President Joe Biden, he is scheduled to attend the United Nations General Assembly on September 22-23 and fly to Cuba afterward for the final leg of his trip.
Lam’s meetings with U.S. tech companies come at a time when Vietnam is positioning itself as a strategic partner for U.S. businesses, especially in sectors like energy, aviation, and technology. Last month, Lam also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his first trip abroad since his appointment.
