The viral TikTok trend of using raw garlic to treat acne may seem promising, but experts warn of serious skin risks. Learn why dermatologists advise against this popular hack.
BollywoodFever: In recent months, TikTok has seen a surge in videos of beauty influencers using raw garlic as a treatment for acne, sparking a viral trend among teenagers and those with acne-prone skin. A simple search for “raw garlic” reveals that more users are sharing skincare hacks than cooking tips, with thousands of likes and views praising garlic’s supposed quick-fix benefits.

The appeal of this trend lies in garlic’s natural antibacterial properties, which some claim can help clear up acne quickly. However, beauty expert Sarah Millecam, Director of Education at Beautiful Brows and Lashes, warns that while garlic does offer some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits, its improper use can cause more harm than good.
Sarah highlights that garlic, especially when applied directly and undiluted, can cause severe skin irritation. “People have reported burning sensations, redness, and even blisters after using garlic on their skin,” she explains, noting that the sulfur in garlic can be too harsh for sensitive or broken skin.
In some cases, rubbing garlic on the face can lead to allergic reactions and contact dermatitis, resulting in itching, swelling, and significant irritation. “Patch testing is essential before trying any home remedy,” Sarah advises.
Garlic’s high sulfur content also poses the risk of chemical burns if left on the skin too long. “I’ve seen people with second-degree burns because of garlic,” she adds. “The risks far outweigh the potential benefits when it can cause long-term damage.”
Instead of using raw garlic, Sarah recommends sticking to proven acne treatments like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. “These treatments offer reliable results without the risks,” she notes, advising those with acne to consult a dermatologist to avoid further skin issues.
This TikTok garlic trend follows other viral health and beauty trends that experts have cautioned against, including the recent Balkan Breakfast craze.
