Instead of following in the footsteps of action-oriented titles, the team behind Tales of the Shire embraced a more relaxed approach. Lead Producer Calliope Ryder, a fan of cozy games like Stardew Valley, found it fitting to adapt Tolkien’s universe into the genre. However, Ryder stresses that the game isn’t just a simple cozy game with hobbits. “We’re not trying to do a really classic cozy game skin but in the Shire. We are framing everything through the perspective of being a hobbit.”
Central to this experience is cooking—an essential part of hobbit life. What began as a minor feature evolved into a core element of the game. “Cooking is love, food is love,” says Lambert, explaining how cooking reflects the heart of hobbit culture. In the game, players gather ingredients, experiment with recipes, and form bonds with villagers, reinforcing the cozy, community-driven experience.
Attention to Detail in Tolkien’s World
Working within such a revered universe comes with immense responsibility. The team at Wētā was deeply aware of the expectations surrounding any adaptation of Tolkien’s works. From the fauna and flora of the Shire to the layout of key landmarks, no detail was too small. “We had back-and-forth arguments about whether lemons should be in the Shire for months,” Ryder laughs.
The team’s dedication to authenticity extended beyond the in-game world. Wētā’s practical effects expertise played a pivotal role, with team members often switching between projects. “People will be like ‘I just finished 3D modeling a costume for a big film, and now I’m back on Tales of the Shire making hobbit outfits,’” Ryder recounts.
Long-Term Plans and Post-Launch Support
Much like other cozy games, Tales of the Shire is designed to have a long lifespan. With plans for post-launch updates and new content, Wētā aims to keep players engaged well beyond the game’s initial release. “There’s so much more to say,” Lambert remarks. “We would love to support as many updates as we can.”
The game’s March 25, 2025, release is just the beginning for Wētā’s gaming ambitions. With a strong foundation and countless stories left to tell, Tales of the Shire has the potential to become a beloved addition to both cozy games and Tolkien’s universe.
