A man has climbed the KTLA tower in Hollywood while holding what appears to be a sign that says “Free Billie Eilish.”
On Tuesday, officials are attempting to extract a man who scaled the KTLA radio tower in Hollywood. The Los Angeles Fire Department was notified of the occurrence around 6:32 p.m. at 5800 West Sunset Boulevard.
The man, referred to as a “protestor” by authorities, is straddling the KTLA marquee and sitting approximately 30 feet up the tower while holding a sign that says “Free Billie Eilish.”
He was observed playing an electric guitar at one point. The handwritten message on the sign’s reverse is indistinct, and it’s unclear what the protester is protesting.
A sizable inflatable airbag has been put below the tower to assist in removing the man securely. Despite this, he appears to be uncooperative and refusing to descend.
LAPD’s crisis negotiation team is communicating with the climber at this time. Crowds of bystanders gathered across the street to watch the standoff unfold.
Power to the radio tower and the electronic marquee was shut off for safety.
East and westbound lanes of Sunset Boulevard were closed off earlier but have now reopened.
