A 50-year-old woman with a US passport copy and Aadhaar card was found bound to a tree in Maharashtra. Authorities are investigating her identity and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
India, Bollywood Fever: In a shocking discovery, a 50-year-old woman carrying a photocopy of a US passport and an Aadhaar card was found bound to a tree with an iron chain in the dense forests of Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. Identified as Lalita Kayi, the woman’s US passport was found to be invalid, prompting authorities to verify the authenticity of her documents to determine her nationality.
The unsettling situation came to light when a shepherd in the Sonurli hamlet, approximately 450 kilometers away, heard the woman’s cries for help on Saturday night and alerted authorities. The woman’s condition and the circumstances surrounding her confinement are currently under investigation by local law enforcement.
Initially brought to Oros in Sindhudurg, Lalita Kayi was transferred to a hospital in Sawantwadi in the Konkan region. Due to her mental and physical condition, she was subsequently moved to Goa Medical College for specialized treatment. Although she is not in immediate danger, her treating physicians have identified mental health issues. Prescription drugs were found in her possession.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office is collaborating with the police in this case. Preliminary information suggests that Lalita Kayi has resided in India for the past decade. However, she is currently unable to provide a statement due to her weakened state, exacerbated by recent heavy rainfall in the area.
Authorities suspect that her Tamil Nadu-born spouse may have been involved in the incident. Police teams have been dispatched to Tamil Nadu, Goa, and other locations to locate her family. Inspector Amol Chavan from Sawantwadi Police station, who was part of the team that found her, stated, “When we discovered her, she was seriously dehydrated. It appears that she was stuck there for a minimum of 48 hours. Although she was mute, she was responsive.”
The police found a purse and a laptop in her possession. Chavan noted that the woman’s legs were secured to the tree with a locked chain, which required the officers to chop down the tree and break the lock to free her.
The matter has been handed over to the Banda police station in Sindhudurg for further investigation. An official confirmed that her Aadhaar card listed an address in Tamil Nadu, and a note mentioned her “former husband,” who is believed to be in Tamil Nadu.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand the full circumstances of this disturbing incident. “She is still very weak, so we haven’t been able to record her statement yet,” a police official told local media.
