Woodside’s Scarborough gas project in Western Australia secures all environmental approvals after a green group drops its federal court challenge.
Bollywood Fever: Woodside’s $12.5 billion Scarborough gas project in Western Australia has officially secured all primary environmental approvals, the company announced on Monday.Â
This milestone comes after the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) agreed to dismiss its legal challenge in the federal court.
The legal dispute, initiated by the ACF in June 2022, sought to halt the Scarborough project until an assessment was made regarding its potential impact on the Great Barrier Reef.
The environmental group argued that the project, due to its contribution to global warming through the export and subsequent burning of gas, should be evaluated under laws protecting the reef.
However, on Monday, Woodside confirmed that the parties had reached an agreement to seek a Federal Court order to dismiss the proceedings against the project.
The ACF did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill emphasized the project’s low environmental impact, stating, “The Scarborough reservoir contains less than 0.1% carbon dioxide and combined with processing design efficiencies will be one of the lowest carbon intensity sources of LNG delivered into north Asian markets.”
The Scarborough gas project, Woodside’s flagship initiative, is expected to produce up to 8 million tons of LNG annually.
Despite its approval, the project has recently faced criticism from climate activists as the global push towards cleaner energy intensifies.
With this legal hurdle cleared, Woodside is now poised to move forward with one of Australia’s most significant energy developments, contributing to the country’s LNG exports and its role in the global energy market.
