13 Migrants Dead After Boat Rips Apart During Crossing Attempt
At least 13 migrants have died after their boat ripped apart during an attempted crossing of the English Channel. Rescuers saved 61 others from the treacherous waters.
Bollywood Fever:A tragic incident unfolded in the English Channel on Tuesday as a boat carrying migrants ripped apart during an attempted crossing, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people.
The incident occurred near the French coastal town of Le Portel, where the mayor, Olivier Barbarin, confirmed the heartbreaking news.
“Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open,” Barbarin said, describing the devastating event as a “big drama.”
The town, located near the fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, set up a first aid post to treat the survivors who were pulled from the treacherous waters.
A maritime rescue official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that at least 13 migrants had died.
Etienne Baggio, a spokesman for the French maritime prefecture overseeing that stretch of sea, indicated that “more than 10” people had lost their lives, though he did not provide an exact number.
The boat encountered difficulties off Gris-Nez point, leading to the tragic outcome. Rescuers managed to recover 61 people from the waters.
Sea temperatures off northern France were around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), adding to the peril faced by those who fell into the channel.
This tragedy is the latest in a series of fatal incidents in the English Channel. According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 30 migrants have died or gone missing while attempting to cross to the U.K. this year alone.
Over the past seven days, the U.K. Home Office reported that at least 2,109 migrants have attempted the dangerous crossing in small boats.
The incident underscores the growing desperation among migrants as they face increasingly strict asylum rules, rising xenophobia, and hostile treatment in Europe, pushing many to undertake the perilous journey north.
