Denver Broncos Name Rookie Bo Nix as Starting Quarterback for Season Opener
Bo Nix becomes the first rookie quarterback to start a season opener for the Denver Broncos since John Elway in 1983. Head coach Sean Payton made the announcement ahead of the 2024 season.
Bollywood Fever: The Denver Broncos have named rookie Bo Nix as their starting quarterback, making him the first rookie signal-caller to start a season opener for the team since Hall of Famer John Elway in 1983.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by head coach Sean Payton, following a morning meeting with Nix and fellow quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson.
Nix, a first-round draft pick out of Oregon, impressed during the preseason, completing 23 of 30 passes for 205 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Broncos scored on six of his seven drives in games against the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers.
“The larger body of work,” Payton said, was the deciding factor in choosing Nix over the competition.

He praised Nix’s consistency, arm strength, and ability to make off-schedule throws. “It’s not really a reflection on Jarrett or even Zach. It’s some of the things that he’s been able to do pretty quickly.”
The decision to start Nix marks a significant moment for the Broncos, who have not made the playoffs since their Super Bowl 50 victory with Peyton Manning in 2016. Denver will open the regular season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on September 8.
Reflecting on the upcoming start, Nix said,
“It will be a special moment. Obviously, that’s great to share with such a great player like John Elway, but my focus is on going out there and giving our team the best chance to win.”
Nix, 24, was the 12th overall pick in the 2024 draft, joining a class that also saw No. 1 pick Caleb Williams and No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels named as starters for the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders, respectively.
Nix is also the first rookie quarterback to open a season under Sean Payton, who is entering his second season as head coach of the Broncos after a successful tenure with the New Orleans Saints.
