Netflix Cancels ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ After One Season Despite Positive Reviews
‘Dead Boy Detectives,’ a series set in the same universe as ‘The Sandman,’ won’t return for a second season on Netflix, despite positive reviews and a spot on the platform’s top 10.
Bollywood Fever: Netflix has decided to cancel Dead Boy Detectives after just one season, ending the series’ run in the same fictional universe as The Sandman.
The cancellation comes approximately four months after the show’s eight-episode season premiered on the streaming platform.
Dead Boy Detectives, produced by Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions, had a complicated journey before landing on Netflix.
Originally set up at Max (formerly HBO Max), the show was ordered as a pilot in 2021 and received a series order a year later.
However, during a shake-up at Warner Bros. and DC, the series, based on characters from the comics by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, was moved to Netflix in February 2023.
It finally premiered 14 months later, featuring George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri in the lead roles.

The series garnered largely positive reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter critic Angie Han praising its “appealingly quirky lead cast and a cheeky sense of humor.” Despite this, Netflix has opted not to renew the show for a second season.
During its run, Dead Boy Detectives spent three weeks in Netflix’s internal top 10 for English-language series, amassing 9.6 million views—equivalent to that many full season showings—in that period.
It also made Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series list twice following its premiere, demonstrating a solid but perhaps not overwhelming viewership.
The series was developed by Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) at Max, who continued his role as co-showrunner when the show transitioned to Netflix.
He worked alongside Beth Schwartz, with both serving as executive producers along with Greg Berlanti, Jeremy Carver, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Neil Gaiman.
While the news of its cancellation is disappointing for fans, Dead Boy Detectives joins a growing list of shows that have faced short lifespans despite critical acclaim and dedicated fanbases.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, even well-received series are not immune to the unpredictable nature of renewals and cancellations.
