NHL Fines Bruins’ Kevin Shattenkirk for Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Kevin Shattenkirk of the Boston Bruins has been fined $2,734.38 for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the fine contributing to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

On Sunday, the NHL imposed a fine of $2,734.38 on Boston Bruins defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk for unsportsmanlike conduct, which is the maximum amount permissible under the collective bargaining agreement.

The incident that led to the fine occurred with 19:37 remaining in the first period during the Bruins’ 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. Penguins player Michael Bunting had inadvertently contacted Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark, causing him to trip and fall after Bunting’s stick got tangled in his skates. As Bunting skated by the Bruins’ bench, Shattenkirk reportedly extended his stick and struck Bunting.

Although Shattenkirk was not penalized during the game for this action, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety later reviewed the incident and decided to levy the fine. The funds collected from the fine will be directed to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

In the game, both players involved made significant contributions to their teams; Shattenkirk scored a goal, while Bunting recorded a goal and an assist. Goaltender Linus Ullmark also played a key role in the Bruins’ victory, making 28 saves.
