Ohio Officers’ Fatal Shooting of Milwaukee Man Near GOP Convention Sparks Outrage

Ohio police officers shot and killed a Milwaukee man near the Republican National Convention, sparking anger among residents and raising questions about the involvement of out-of-state officers.

Bollywood Fever: Ohio police officers in Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention shot and killed a Milwaukee man on Tuesday, leading to a wave of anger and questions from local residents about the presence of out-of-state officers in their neighborhood.

The incident occurred about a mile from the convention site, where thousands of officers from multiple jurisdictions are providing additional security. According to a statement from the Columbus, Ohio, police department, their officers were involved in the shooting.

Despite the proximity to the convention, the Columbus Police Department, Milwaukee’s mayor’s office, and the convention’s joint command center spokeswoman all stated that there was no indication the shooting was related to the convention.

Milwaukee residents and activists quickly gathered at the shooting site, expressing outrage over the involvement of out-of-state police. Dozens of officers stood behind police tape, refusing to answer questions about the incident.

“They came into our community and shot down our family right here at a public park,” said Linda Sharpe, who identified the victim as her cousin, Samuel Sharpe. Samuel Sharpe lived in a tent encampment across the street from King Park, where the shooting took place.

Kenneth Johnson, a volunteer with Friends Without Shelter, frequently delivered food to Sharpe and others in the encampment. He questioned why an out-of-state officer was at the location, stating, “They shouldn’t have jurisdiction to be in this area. This isn’t near where the zones are.”

In response, the Columbus Police Department released a statement saying the shooting occurred “within the operational zone to which our officers were assigned.”

The department’s special unit, deployed to Milwaukee to improve police-community relationships, had been visible during the largely peaceful protests on Monday. Officers in blue vests labeled “Columbus Police Dialogue” had been guiding protesters near King Park, a mile from the convention center.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that an adult male was shot and killed, with an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday. The Milwaukee Police Department has not yet responded to requests for more details about the shooting.

The incident has ignited a debate about the presence and jurisdiction of out-of-state officers, especially in sensitive and volatile environments. As the investigation continues, residents demand answers and justice for Samuel Sharpe, questioning the broader implications of such an incident occurring during a significant political event.
